Thankful For Slow Thinking

What a perfect time to reflect and give thanks! As we begin this week to officially kick off the holiday season I am grateful this Thanksgiving for entertaining thoughts of not only thinking more slowly, but seriously thinking about what it would actually take to become a successful slow thinker.

Somewhere along life’s way, somebody came up with this absurd idea of speed being a trend that would reinvent our future. What? The funny thing is the older I get the more I come to really appreciate being slower at things. Hey, I have as much time on my watch as everyone else does. My seconds don’t move any faster or slower than anyone else’s. I think the difference is how we choose to utilize these seconds.

I remember years ago changing jobs from a mid-level management position to a new entry level position at nearly half the salary. One of my peers asked why I was giving up such a “lucrative” job to start from scratch again? My immediate response, without hesitation, was that for some people it was all about the money, and for others it was “time” that made them feel rich. I still believe this!

Slow thinking allows us to try and enjoy life’s moments as they are presented to us. Slow thinking gives us our best opportunity to “catch” the good times while they are happening. Slow thinking aids us in sitting still, gives us time to reflect, relax, and spend more time with friends and family. Slow thinking is the best thing you can do to let your mind wander and not worry about the clock. Slow thinking allows you to live in the moment.

Life has two fixed points, the beginning of it, and the end of it! We have a pretty good idea these days as to the start of life, even the exact day and time, not so with the end of life! We just have no idea of when that door will open up to let us walk through it do we? Life doesn’t come with a speed limit or a list of things we have to accomplish before it ends. Slow thinking, will help you to enjoy and experience the moments in your life which are worth remembering without any of the distractions.

If slow thinking was the equivalent of your favorite food or beverage, would you prefer to gulp it all down or savor it for as long as you’re able? If multitasking and thinking about things you can never change are bad for your health, will shorten your lifespan, will you skim over these habits or indulge in them?

For many of us today, if time is what makes us rich we are living below the poverty level. We need a hand out! The good news is you don’t have to buy a scratch ticket, or wait on some unknown family inheritance, heck you don’t even have to wait for the government to bail you out, or invent some new form of entitlement!

You already have all you need to live lavishly, you have the ability to slow down your thinking, to erase the distractions your mind allows to creep in. You can start right now on your new path of wealth by enjoying the moment. Now is the time to get rich and create time for yourself, you are never going to find it in a paycheck!

Go ahead, read this post all over again, you have the time!
