A Toy Chest of Time

Unwrapping the Gift of Christmas Memories

Making Christmas Memories

You know, I’d end up on Santa’s naughty list if I said I never got excited about presents at Christmas time. But even so, there was a certain restraint in those moments of excitement about what he’d leave under the tree. There were no long lists or hours spent watching TV commercials to decide what to ask for—just the simple joy of anticipation.

Now, after all these years, I realize I have a toy chest in my heart, filled with the unwrapped gifts of countless Christmas memories. These days, I spend more time reflecting and appreciating the treasures tucked inside that chest—memories that shine brighter with each passing year.

The Toys That Made the Memories

How many Christmas mornings came with a Flexible Flyer sled or a shiny silver snow saucer waiting under the tree? Or the sight of a giant doll, too big for wrapping paper, standing proudly in the corner? And who could forget the little joys—candy canes in stockings or a colorful box of Lifesavers?

Each item was more than a toy; it was a piece of the season’s magic, a moment woven into the fabric of childhood.

“Happy, happy Christmas, that can win us back to the delusions of our childish days; that can recall to the old man the pleasures of his youth, that can transport the sailor and the traveler, thousands of miles away, back to his own fireside and his quiet home!”

Charles Dickens

The True Gift of Christmas Memories

Today, my toy chest of Christmas memories is my greatest gift. It’s a testament to the people who filled my life with love, joy, and moments that I cherish year after year.

“Gifts of time and love are surely the basic ingredients of a truly merry Christmas.”

Time is the gift we hold onto with an ever-growing sense of awareness and gratitude. The years we’ve been given remind us to unwrap each moment carefully and savor it for the blessing it truly is.

My toy chest of memories provides a perpetual Christmas spirit—a gift I’ll continue to unwrap for as long as I can. It allows me to relive the warmth, joy, and connections of the season, year after year.

Fill Your Toy Chest

This Christmas, I encourage you to fill your toy chest with memories. Let it be a collection of moments, big and small, that you’ll treasure for years to come. Take the time to reflect, revisit, and unwrap these gifts again and again—they are the most meaningful treasures of all.

“Christmas! The very word brings joy to our hearts. No matter how we may dread the rush, the long Christmas lists for gifts and cards to be bought and given—when Christmas Day comes, there is still the same warm feeling we had as children—the same warmth that enfolds our hearts and our homes.”

Joan Winmill Brown

Fill your toy chest with the gifts of time, love, and connection. Then, unwrap them, over and over again.
