Gratitude Over Greener Grass

Are you one of those “grass is greener” people? Is “content” a word you can truly connect with? I’ll admit, sometimes it’s hard not to get caught up in the “if I only had…” mindset. I think most of us have daydreamed about what we’d do if we ever hit the lottery. But what about what you already have? What are you grateful for? How happy are you with the grass that surrounds you right now?

“There is no better than here. The other side of the hill may be greener than your own, but being there is not the key to endless happiness. Be grateful for and enjoy what you have, and where you are on your journey. Appreciate the abundance of what’s good in your life, rather than measure and amass things that do not actually lead to happiness. Living in the present helps you attain peace.”

Cherie Carter-Scott

It always sounds so simple, doesn’t it? But the truth is, it never has to be as complicated as we make it. A bigger issue is how easily we allow ourselves to be convinced that more or bigger is better. Have you ever noticed that 99.9% of commercials show people smiling? Buy this car, wear these clothes, take this medication, drink this beer - you get the picture. But can you smile openly when you’re alone, simply because you’re happy with what you already have?

“Comparison is the thief of joy.”

Theodore Roosevelt

Grass is grass, and doesn’t it all have dirt underneath it? The more dirt you have the more flowers you can grow on your side of the fence. That can’t be all bad, right? Cultivate your goodness and watch how it blossoms.

“We all have different gifts, so we all have different ways of saying to the world who we are.”

Fred Rogers

Gratitude is the gift that keeps on giving. It doesn’t matter how green the grass is, or what the fence looks like, no matter what side you’re standing on. What’s important is how you feel about everything already surrounding you.
