Emotionally Home

The Loft we live in is filled with items that make us feel like we live in a museum curated especially for us. It wasn’t designed for us but by us, and a lot of thought went into choosing the items we wanted to share our space with. The building’s design and every item we put on display are meant to make the loft feel like more than just a place to live - it is home.

This got me to thinking about where we live emotionally. Our home was designed and built with purpose and character. It has a coziness and warmth that makes you always want to come back. It’s a safe place. I remember coming home after a really bad day and feeling like “home” hugged me as soon as I walked through the door.

I want the space that exists inside me to feel the same way. Just as thoughtful planning went into building the loft, I know I’m capable of using the tools I already have to refresh my internal emotions, creating a place where I feel safe and comforted within myself.

“Eventually, all of us will pass away and slowly be forgotten. We should enjoy this brief time we have on earth - not be enslaved to emotions that make us miserable and dissatisfied.”

Ryan Holiday

I’m not kidding when I say I never really put enough thought into where I live emotionally. But once I started paying attention, I realized how much time I wasted being fearful, even angry, about things I couldn’t control. When I compare that to how we designed our home, it makes sense that I’d want to work just as hard on myself. If not, who’s to say even I wouldn’t want me hanging around in the loft! LOL.

I think we need to fear less and dream more. What does fear help us achieve? If anything, it stands in the way of realizing our dreams. Our dreams are part of the belongings that live inside of us; they’re the design tools that can take us anywhere we want to go emotionally. Dreams are the spark we all need to feel like we’re always at home. They help ensure that a sense of safety, coziness, and comfort follow us wherever we go.

The most eye-opening part of this process was realizing I didn’t have to wait to put it into practice. I need to be consistent to turn it into a habit. Just as Joshua Fields Millburn wisely said, “There’s no refund on time poorly spent.”

Exactly! What am I waiting for? What are you waiting for? I know I have to take myself to task. Dreams remain dreams without actionable steps. I dream a lot, sometimes even while on my feet. I’m proud of it, and you should be too!

My emotional residence will always need my attention, and I’m okay with that. I want to be the one in charge of how I feel inside. Why would I give that responsibility to anyone else? My life, my script. My dreams, my reality.

“When we have the courage to walk into our story and own it, we get to write the ending.”

Brene Brown

Brene is right. Not only do we get to write the ending, but we can also change the scenes along the way. This is what happens when we’re mindful and deliberate about where we choose to live emotionally. Fix yourself and you’ll always have a place to call home.
