The Morning Light
A Metaphor for Creativity and Connection
The Power of Metaphor in Writing
For me, metaphor is more than just a writing tool—it’s a way of making sense of the world. It helps me take ideas, emotions, and experiences that can feel abstract and ground them in something familiar. Instead of struggling to explain something I can’t quite put into words, metaphor lets me connect it to something tangible that resonates on a deeper level.
The Sacred Space of Mornings
Morning light has always been a reset button for me—a fresh start, a quiet pause before the day fully begins. In these early hours, I get to slow down, listen, and reflect before the outside world demands my attention.
These moments are intentional, reflective, and personal. Soon, as the weather warms up, I’ll be cracking the windows open and letting nature do its thing—birds waking up, a soft breeze rolling in, the rustling of trees. No matter the season, I’ve learned to embrace this time and make it my own.
“An early-morning walk is a blessing for the whole day.”
Henry David Thoreau
Finding Metaphors in Everyday Life
Some of the best metaphors come from the everyday moments that feel bigger than they seem. Take summer mornings by the sea—gentle waves rolling pebbles onto shore, the distant call of seabirds, the way a rising sun melts into the horizon. It’s nature reminding me that things are constantly moving, always changing. And that’s okay.
Or the shift between seasons—when the wind carries the scent of something new, when a cracked window lets in just enough sound to remind me that the world is waking up too. Even in the city, there’s a rhythm to morning—night sounds fade, traffic hums to life, and people begin their day. It’s all transition.
“Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain.”
Vivian Greene
How Metaphor Fuels My Creativity
Metaphor makes my creative process feel natural. These early morning moments help me arrange my thoughts and set the tone for the day ahead. They remind me that I don’t need to follow some rigid formula—I can interpret life in my own way.
Metaphor also helps me process emotions, make sense of complicated things, and connect with what truly matters. It’s a tool, sure, but more than that—it’s a way of seeing and experiencing the world.
A while back, I wrote about the tree, ”Acceptance vs. Surrender.” That post helped me work through the idea of standing firm in my beliefs while still being open to different perspectives. Sometimes, we grow in different directions, but that doesn’t mean we can’t exist together.
“You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.”
Maya Angelou
The Bigger Picture
Metaphors aren’t just for writing—they are how we find meaning in the everyday. It bridges the gap between what’s happening inside us and what’s happening around us. The best part? You don’t need some big, life-changing moment to experience it.
If you take the time to really look, you’ll find metaphors everywhere.
“The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper.”
W.B. Yeats
