Every now and then out of nowhere an event happens, and quite by accident mind you, your environment changes and makes you appreciate some of the better parts of the human spirit. This little guy right here happened into our house by way of a wonderful rescue Mom. He is a purebred French Bulldog who was snatched at birth from his mother and all of his little siblings.
Snatched is perhaps the wrong word here. I should more accurately describe the moment of separation as being cast-off, not wanted, a misfit, even as cruel a word as, rejected! His name is “Toasty!” Bare with me here, Toasty for “French Toast - French Bulldog!” Yep, now you get it, right?
You see, Toasty came from a breeder, the kind who are in it purely for the money. If you look at Toasty you will notice that he was born with no elbow on his left leg. He walks and runs around on the other three just fine, heck he doesn’t even know he has a leg shorter than the other three, in fact he doesn’t even care. The breeder though, well they don’t even want you to know who they are, they don’t want anyone to know that they had a pup with a defect, that would reduce the outrageous price they ask for these cute little guys.
Toasty was sent to be euthanized right at birth so no one would know of his existence. This sweeter than sweet rescue Mom got a hold of him and bottle fed him until he was ready to go to a new forever home. We are the winners here! Toasty has been a welcome addition into our house since day one. He is the sweetest, most lovable little guy you could imagine. Always by someones side, and capable of entertaining himself when he has to. Even his new sister, a 16 year old Siamese cat has come to accept him. As antagonistic as she may be, her behavior towards him tells us that she likes the little guy too!
Toasty, because of his immediate separation from his mother and the other pups, has never struggled with any level of separation anxiety like some new pups can. He has been in the hands of only humans since birth. Toasty has come to realize there are more good people in the world than not. In fact he knows nothing but love and gives of himself unconditionally, even waiting patiently for meal time, though the pouting look on his face might make you think otherwise.
He has no idea he is challenged compared to other dogs, in fact when he is sitting by your side he believes the top of your shoe is for him to place his left foot on for balance. Everything he has learned to do he has taught himself. The reward he gets in return is a genuine appreciation for being a member of the family. When he runs around he does so on three legs, only three. This is what he knows, it is what works for him.
The photograph of Toasty here is made so much more appropriate by the heart pillow in view. It exemplifies the love he gives to the people in his life. Even though it is only a small token of the amount of love he receives in return, it is a ginormous symbol of the kindest of hearts the rescue Mom had in securing Toasty with the kind of fate which gives him the greatest opportunity of living a life he is so worthy of!
