Collage

In one of its simplest forms collage can be defined as, “a combination or collection of various things.” In this most basic definition of the word it describes our life and all of the emotions that go into it, yes? This photograph is from a recent trip to Paris during the Christmas holiday. You are looking at one of the windows at the Galleries Lafayette during the holiday rush. You can also see the reflection of buildings, cars, and people during this moment of my time. A collage of what is going on indeed!

“We are a collage of our interests, our influences, our inspirations, all the fragmentary impressions we’ve collected by being alive and awake to the world. Who we are is simply a finely-curated catalogue of those.”

Maria Popova

It shouldn’t take too much imagination then to understand and recognize the creative art that resides in all of us. Without even trying we live a life that is often juxtaposed to the elements of our surroundings. Collage in all of its creative intensity can deliver a message about our personal history, whether intentional or not.

“We occupy a space of our own creation - a collage compounded by bits and pieces of actuality arranged into a design determined by our internal perceptions, our hopes, our fears, our memories, and our anticipations.”

Willard Gaylin

Life is a collage of our moments, our memories, the people, places, and things that have come together, unique to who we are as a person. Imagine the masterpiece we could create with being a little more intentional in how we approach our canvas?

“Collage is more than just an art style. Collage is all about bringing different elements together. Once you form a sensibility about connection, how different elements relate to each other, you deepen your understanding of yourself and others.”

Bryan Collier
