HYGGE (hoo-ga)

The one thing that can make a warm and cozy fire even more comfortable on a cold winters day would be a roaring Nor’Easter blowing outside. This is the epitome of HYGGE! The Danish word for comfort, cozy, and content. A few years ago I was doing some personal research on happiness and I came across this book; “The Little Book Of HYGGE” by Meik Wiking. I have since read the book at least five or six times, it is one of my favorites. HYGGE is a Danish way of living and it is so simple to grasp, I would recommend it to anyone looking to inject more happiness into their day.

“You don’t spell it, you feel it.”

Winnie-the-Pooh

You can experience HYGGE at anytime throughout the year, however the peak HYGGE season is the festive holiday season right through the winter. The book is loaded with great ideas and tips on how to add HYGGE to your life during every month of the year.

Candles, scarfs, warm, woolen socks, hot chocolate, and the smell of slow cooking home-made food, accompanied by a favorite book, are all ingredients for enjoying some HYGGE in your life. Just like the most famous philosopher of our time mentioned, “…you feel it.”

During a time of year when the weather and the temperatures can darken even the brightest of days, I will leave you with this;

“This is my wish for you: comfort on difficult days, smiles when sadness intrudes, rainbows to follow the clouds, laughter to kiss your lips, sunsets to warm your heart, hugs when spirits sag, beauty for your eyes to see, friendships to brighten your being, faith so that you can believe, confidence for when you doubt, courage to know yourself, patience to accept the truth, LOVE to complete your life.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson
