Keep to Your Line

This moment right here is the most distraction - free time of my day - early morning, quiet, with coffee nearby and a pen in hand. It sets the tone for everything that follows. I’m currently working on a series of essays with an ironic twist that even surprises me. Over the years, I’ve gone back and forth with the idea behind this book, even throwing away one version that had already reached 78 pages. Ugh! At the time, I felt like I was telling the wrong story - one that wasn’t truly mine to share. I needed to return to what was living inside my head. In other words, I had to “keep to my line.”

“If you can believe in what you are and keep to your line - that is the most one can do with life.”

Georgia O’Keeffe

I’ve been inspired by many different people and creative processes over the years, but a few hold a special place in my heart. Each one has brought me back to my own methods of self-expression, grounding me in the process. Opening myself up to the possibilities within my imagination is always the starting point.

No idea is truly original; everything that exists has been built on something that came before. We move forward by making connections and adding our own pieces to what already is. This is how we make it our voice and a reflection of who we are.

“Believe you can and you’re halfway there.”

Theodore Roosevelt

The fear of not being “good enough” has become a teacher. It’s pushed me to embrace a creative world that has kept humanity connected for generations. It’s impossible to believe you’re having thoughts that no one has ever had before. That’s why we must all “keep to our lines.”

“You are the sum total of everything you’ve ever seen, heard, eaten, smelled, been told, forgot - it’s all there. Everything influences each of us, and because of that I try to make sure that my experiences are positive.”

Maya Angelou

Go exploring, be inspired, borrow ideas from everywhere. Hunt and gather; and then come back home to yourself, to who you really are.
