Simplicity

We have become very good at making the simple very complex. The simplicity in our lives begins with our ability of knowing where to look for it. Make a conscious decision to declutter your thoughts and emotions before you get out of bed each day. Let yourself create an abundance of negative space in your mind, this will allow you to use your own light to guide you through the day.

We are all going to keep missing the simple things going on around us if we keep relinquishing control of our thinking to all of the distractions the world is forcing upon us.

“To find the universal elements enough; to find the air and the water exhilarating; to be refreshed by a morning walk or an evening saunter … to be thrilled by the stars at night; to be elated over a bird’s nest or a wildflower in Spring - these are some of the rewards of the simple life.”

John Burroughs

On a recent morning walk I bumped into one of these moments. In the photograph above I was looking at a scene that matched my thinking in a freeze frame kind of way. It was simple and filled with more of less. A photograph I knew would help me convey my message for this post.

“What’s really important is to simplify. The work of most photographers would be improved immensely if they could do one thing, get rid of the extraneous. If you strive for simplicity, you are more likely to reach the viewer.”

William Albert Allard

I’ve found a voice in the simplicity of short form writing, and the connectedness it brings me to mindful photography and now, a touch of whimsical art work. The integration of all three allows me to express a philosophy on life in a creative way and aligns with what I can control in my own life. Distractions are a dime a dozen and the main reason why we miss out on the simple and turn it into the complex.

“Simplicity involves unburdening your life, and living lightly with fewer distractions that interfere with a high quality life, as defined uniquely by each individual. You will find people living simply in large cities, rural areas, and everything in between.”

Linda Breen Pierce

Make today your day. Start by creating negative space in your mind so you have more room to enjoy the little things.

“Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.”
