Starting Point

Every day is the same. Between 4 and 5 a.m., the smell of freshly made coffee follows me into my studio. The only difference is whether or not the windows are open and how much daylight is beginning to share this space with me. Soon, I will be wrapping up my morning journaling before the light creeps in. Creature of habit? Absolutely! As much as each day is the same, they are all different. Each of them has a blank page to fill in with the choices I make.

“Where I am today is my starting point. Who I am today is my starting point. My failures and successes of the past, my fears and hopes of the future are all shadows. Today is my reality, and I’ll use it to create my world.”

Taylor Stevens

There are many choices. Sometimes I rush and make the wrong choice, but that’s okay. There is no failure, only an opportunity to step back and start over again. The only person I am in a race with is myself: no winner, no loser, only another chance to begin as fresh as my morning coffee.

“Every sunset is an opportunity to reset. Every sunrise begins with new eyes.”

Richie Norton

All the days of our lives come with a beginning and an end. Each new day, we get to choose how we react to the script we are handed. If you don’t like what you see, crumple it up and start over. Write your script. We are responsible for the weight of our emotional baggage. Lighten up your load, and don’t carry yesterday’s problems into a new day.

“Each new day is a blank page in the diary of your life. The secret is in turning that diary into the best story you possibly can.”

Douglas Pagels

I want each day to become the starting point to feed my heart and soul. Pencil in that reflective time for yourself each day. I know I can’t relive yesterday, but I can do better by making today as good as possible. Life gets heavy, and often, the heaviest parts are the things we cannot see. Letting go is an exercise we all too frequently overlook.

“Be willing to be a beginner every single morning.”

Meister Eckhart

There is much to be learned from so many who have come before me, but I have become a better student of life by watching my failures. Understanding what goes wrong today can lead me to a better place tomorrow. Even when I rush, I know there will be plenty of moments to slow down and start over.

“You are never too old to start over. Every day is a chance to make changes to create the life we want.”

Karon Waddell

Spend a little time with your starting point each day. Give yourself permission to be your best self and enjoy the life you want to live.
