Toes In The Sand

When I was a kid, we didn’t have many opportunities to go to the beach. It was not because we didn’t want to; we didn’t have the means. Sometimes, we would visit someone’s summer cottage or spend a day at a freshwater pond. But the ocean was not a memory maker for me, at least not until I was old enough to drive. Sadly, it was never my thing. Age changes things. Yes?

“Every time I stand before a beautiful beach, its waves seem to whisper to me: If you choose the simple things and find joy in nature’s simple treasures, life and living need not be so hard.”

Psyche Roxas-Mendoza

A few years ago, I felt a strong calling to go to the beach, not only to feel the warm sand slip between my toes but also to walk along the shore and let the waves roll over the tops of my feet. It was the equivalent of walking into a custom-made spiritual moment. All the thoughts I had before that walk became a reality when my bare feet touched the sand.

“The ocean stirs the heart, inspires the imagination and brings eternal joy to the soul.”

Robert Wayland

Within the last few days, we were blessed to experience this moment of awe again. We headed down to the sea with the same deliberateness and intentions as that calling from a few years back. Warm sand blending with calm ocean waters, rising to our shins, she speaks. Soft but mighty, with a calmness that wraps her arms around your heart. There is no need for anything else at this moment.

“One learns first of all in beach living, the art of shedding; how little one can get along with, not how much.”

Anne Morrow Lindbergh

And from those years as a youngster, when summer laid out different plans, I’ve made my way back to the sea. I am filled with emotions that couldn’t have existed back then. Yet her voice still whispers her stories to anyone who will listen.

“In one drop of water are found all the secrets of all the oceans.”

Kahlil Gibran
