Well-Being

I wouldn’t think about heading out on a road trip with a crack running through the center of my windshield. Nor would I attempt that same road trip with low air pressure in my tires or steam coming out from under the hood. Hell no, would you? To the best of my abilities, I would want to make sure that my car was in tip-top shape for the journey ahead.

Most of us don’t pay attention to our well-being or do the necessary maintenance for safe passage on this journey called life. Now and then, we need to check the oil, fill our emotional coolant, and rotate the tires to ensure we balance things. We should want our life’s journey to be as safe and secure as our road trip. Listen to the funny noises your mind and body are making, as if you were hearing the funny sounds coming from under the hood of your car.

“It’s up to you today to start making healthy choices. Not choices that are just healthy for your body, but healthy for your mind.”

Steve Maraboli

No one will ever be able to manage your health and well-being better than you can, and no one will ever make your well-being as necessary a priority for your survival as you should. Your responsibility begins with you. So why do we continue with our journey without paying attention to what is going on under our hood? What happens to the routine and preventive maintenance that we owe to ourselves?

“The concept of total wellness recognizes that our every thought, word, and behavior affects our greater health and well-being. And we, in turn, are affected not only emotionally but also physically and spiritually.”

Greg Anderson

There are no guarantees in life. We could go all out to care for ourselves and still run into circumstances beyond our control. Our job, though, is to do the best with those things we can control. Why leave that to someone? When does our responsibility kick in? I like the responsibility of caring for what is going on under the hood. I’m far from perfect, but I am constantly working to get the most mileage from what I have been given. What I can do better with is what I am aware of. I try to stay ahead of the curve and fully charge my battery. When things get rough, I would rather take it on with all of my energy instead of half a tank.

“Doctors won’t make you healthy, nutritionists won’t make you slim. Teachers won’t make you smart. Gurus won’t make you calm. Mentors won’t make you rich. Trainers won’t make you fit. Ultimately, you have to take responsibility. Save yourself.”

Naval Ravikant

Look, it was never meant to be easy, but it was always meant to be worth it. There are many things in life that each of us cares very deeply about. Imagine the possibilities of caring for and appreciating so much more becasue we are doing our best to maintain our sense of well-being. Do the routine maintenance, check under the hood, and walk around to kick the tires now and then. When you get really good, you can keep your windows as clean as they were when they were still on the showroom floor!

“Nurturing yourself is not selfish - it’s essential to your survival and well-being.”
